    Seriously though, there’s no real mystery and no real need for the term ‘cloud services’ either, just as Web 2.0 was a complete invention and not really anything new technology wise.

    The Cloud is The Internet. Cloud Services have been around for years, under names like ‘Software as a Service’, or going back further, ‘Application Service Provision (ASP)’. In this case though the term has been heavily adopted and sits well in peoples’ minds, so we’ve jumped on the band wagon too.

    There are lots of very exciting new technologies and offerings that are out there for sales and marketing that you will want to know about for a number of good reasons.

    Firstly, they require no capital investment. You don’t need to spend up front on servers, software and development and can rent it all on a monthly basis.

    Secondly, you don’t need to know, care or worry about the technology ie what servers are needed, what back ups to do, what updates to install or what to do if the application stops working. You simply log in, customise the application to suit your needs and start using the web based functionality.

    The most well known Cloud Service in the sales and marketing world is Salesforce.com; Microsoft’s equivalent ‘Dynamics CRM’ is also available for a monthly rental. Equally as exciting, you can now get Microsoft Office 365, which includes: Exchange, SharePoint, Office Communicator and Office Professional Online, all for a small monthly user fee. Not to mention all the Application as a Service tools that have come to market to help build scalable and redundant applications.

    When sites get hit by loads of traffic from Facebook, unexpected PR or bad weather (ask our client The Highways Agency!), they don’t fall over from excessive visitors and just call on extra resources to meet the demand.
